A GREENWICH HOSPITAL ALLIANCE
Mogul Meister Ski Club to Present Seminar on Ski Injury Prevention
Orthopedics Experts Offer Advice on Physical Conditioning and Ski Safety
WHITE PLAINS, NY The ONS Foundation in Greenwich, Connecticut will present a seminar on ski and snowboard injury prevention on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at 8:00 p.m. to the Mogul Meister Ski Club at the Knights of Columbus Hall, 139 North Broadway, White Plains, NY. Orthopedic and sports medicine physicians Steven Hindman, M.D. and Paul Sethi, M.D. will discuss the causes of the most common skiing injuries and how many of them can be avoided. The presentation will offer important tips for safe skiing and information about the latest treatments for common injuries such as a ruptured ACL. Ski club members and non-members are invited to attend. Admission is free. A cash bar will also be available. To find out more about the seminar or the Mogul Meister Ski Club, call (914) 462-3400.
“Each year four in every thousand skiers suffer moderate to severe injures. Preparing your body before you head to the slopes is the best thing you can do to help your odds of having an injury-free ski season,” says Dr. Hindman who is an orthopedic surgeon and physician committee member of the ONS Foundation for Clinical Research and Education. “The better condition you are in, the less likely you are to be injured. Conditioning should focus on developing leg strength and flexibility along with building core stability and cardiovascular endurance.”
According to the American College of Sports Medicine, falls account for roughly 85 percent of skiing injuries which include sprains, fractures, lacerations and dislocations. Fatigue is a major factor although, improperly fitted equipment and mal-adjusted binding contribute to nearly half of all skiing injuries. Injury rates have remained constant for the past ten years, which may be partially due to increasingly popular injury prevention and awareness campaigns.
The Free seminar on January 20 will also include a presentation and demonstration on conditioning and strengthening exercises by Physical Therapist Chalon Lefebvre, PT, CSCS, LMT of ONS, Orthopaedic and Neurosurgery Specialists.
